Toronto Transit Guide: Getting to BMO Field on Matchday
It's matchday. You're in your kit, the group chat is blowing up, and you've got a couple of hours before kickoff. The last thing you want is to be stuck in traffic on the Gardiner, circling a parking lot on Princes' Boulevard, or waiting on a rideshare that's somehow 22 minutes away from a city of three million people.
Here's the move: leave the car. Toronto's transit infrastructure is built for exactly this, and on a summer matchday, riding the streetcar with 200 other fans in full kit is honestly part of the experience.
Here's everything you need to know.
Where You're Going
BMO Field
170 Princes' Blvd, Toronto
Exhibition Place, Lake Ontario Waterfront
The stadium sits right on the waterfront at Exhibition Place, walking distance from Liberty Village and the Bathurst Street corridor. On matchday, the whole area around the stadium becomes a festival in itself.
TTC Streetcar — The Fan Favourite
This is how most fans do it. Affordable, reliable, and it drops you practically at the gates.
509 Harbourfront Streetcar
Departs from Union Station, runs along the waterfront, stops at Exhibition Place. About 10–15 minutes from Union. On matchday, this car fills fast with fans in full kit — it's loud, it's fun, and by the time you get off you're already in matchday mode.
511 Bathurst Streetcar
Runs south down Bathurst Street straight to Exhibition Place. Perfect if you're coming from Little Italy, the Annex, or anywhere along the Bathurst corridor.
Key tips for the TTC:
- Get a PRESTO card before matchday. Load it up, tap and go — no fumbling for cash at the machine when 300 fans are behind you.
- TTC adds extra service on major event days. The cars will be packed. That's part of it.
- Leave at least 60–90 minutes before kickoff to clear the crowds and get into your seat without the sprint.
- After the final whistle: the waterfront walk back toward King West or Liberty Village is genuinely pleasant in summer and often faster than waiting for the streetcar. Try it once.
GO Transit — For Fans Coming from the GTA
Flying in and staying in Mississauga? Coming from Hamilton, Oakville, Brampton, Scarborough, or further out? GO Transit is your route.
Every GO rail line converges at Union Station in the heart of downtown. From there, the 509 Harbourfront streetcar takes you the rest of the way. The whole journey is seamless on a single PRESTO card.
GO runs extra service on major event days. Check the GO Transit app or Triplinx for real-time schedules and plan your return trip before you leave home.
Rideshare — Uber & Lyft
Rideshare is fine pre-match if you're leaving early. Post-match is a different story.
The moment tens of thousands of fans pour out of BMO Field after the final whistle, every rideshare app in Toronto gets hit simultaneously. Surge pricing kicks in fast, wait times stretch to 30–40 minutes, and the drop-off zones around Exhibition Place get gridlocked.
The smarter play: grab a drink in Liberty Village or find a patio on King West. Let the surge dissipate over 30–45 minutes, then request your ride. You'll pay less and wait less.
Pre-match, drop off at a nearby intersection like King & Dufferin or King & Strachan and walk the last 10 minutes. Easier on the driver, easier for you.
Parking — If You're Driving
You can drive. Just know what you're getting into.
- Exhibition Place Lots: Parking directly on site. Fills up fast. Arrive very early or expect to circle.
- Green P App: Toronto's city parking network. Book a spot in advance in nearby Liberty Village or King West lots. Much less stressful.
- SpotHero: Pre-book private lot spaces. Often the best option for guaranteed parking without the day-of stress.
- Street parking: Effectively non-existent in the area on matchdays. Don't count on it.
Honest take: if you're driving, budget an extra hour on either side of the match. The streetcar will be faster and you'll enjoy the day more.
Cycling — The Underrated Option
Toronto's waterfront trail runs directly past Exhibition Place. On a warm June or July morning, cycling to a World Cup match along the lake is one of those experiences that makes you feel genuinely great about where you are.
- Bike Share Toronto: Docked bikes available citywide. Find stations near your hotel with the Bike Share app. Affordable, easy, no parking stress.
- Waterfront Trail: Car-free path running from downtown all the way to Exhibition Place. Scenic, smooth, about 20–25 minutes from the downtown core by bike.
- Bike parking is available near the stadium entrance.
Walking from Liberty Village
If you're based in Liberty Village or spending your pre-match time on King West, you can walk to BMO Field in around 10–15 minutes. On matchday, this walk transforms. Jerseys in every direction. Chants starting up. Street vendors. The noise of the city building toward something.
It's the best way to arrive.
The Apps You Need
- Transit App — Real-time TTC arrivals, route planning, the one you'll use most
- GO Transit App — Regional rail schedules from the GTA
- Triplinx — All-in-one trip planner combining TTC, GO, and more
- Green P — City parking lots, pre-booking

The Short Version
509 streetcar from Union Station. PRESTO card. Leave 90 minutes before kickoff. Walk back along the waterfront after the match.
Do that, and you'll arrive at BMO Field stress-free, on time, and already in the right headspace for 90 minutes of football that this city will be talking about for a very long time.
